About Cala Figuera

Cala Figuera is a Spanish town and village belonging to the village of Santañyí in the south-east of Mallorca, an autonomous community of the Balearic Islands. On the Mediterranean coast, near this city, are the cities of Cap d`es Moro, Son Moja, Cala Santañyí and the capital Santañyí.

The town has a fishing and sports port in the bay of the same name, which is managed by the port authority of the Balearic Islands. The nearest beaches are Cala Santañyí and s`Amarador, located in the Mondragón Natural Park.

History

Cala Figuera was first documented in 1306. At the end of Cala Figuera Bay, a watchtower was built in 1569, which is restored and in good condition, known as Torre d`en Beu, next to which a lighthouse of the same name was installed in 1953.

There is evidence of the use of ships in the bay since the late 19th century, which were powered by sails. The first building to be built in Cala Figuera was a barracks for storing ships, built by the priest José Burgesa and the doctor Bernardo Escalis. The first house dates from 1899 and was owned by the lords of Can Ferrereto.

In 1938, during the Spanish Civil War, the first church was built, now converted into a restaurant. In 1950, a small fish market and dock were built. At that time, the process of urbanization began on the right side of Caló d`en Busques, where the houses were built into a dense pine forest occupied by the inhabitants of Santañyí themselves.

The city gradually grew until there was a great boom in the early 70`s, when the Marina del Tomarinar began to develop in the upper part of Cala Figuera. At that time, many houses and several hotels were built, which were poorly occupied due to difficulties in the bay area with a lack of bathing opportunities. Several houses were also built in Caló d`en Boira, in today`s Sa Covassa district.

Even so, urbanization, unlike other nearby coastal centers, has never been excessive. Decades ago, apartments began to be built in the area where the Cala Figuera Hotel, now destroyed, was located.

Geography

Cala Figuera Bay is one of the deepest and narrowest on the island. Its estuary, between the points of Cala Figuera in the north and Es Morràs in the south, is 400 meters in the widest part, limited to only 150 meters, so entry is quite complicated in situations where eastern storms strike, which occasionally occur here.
